Surrendering a 21-4 run to end regulation, the Mean Green women’s basketball fell to Grand Canyon University 67-65 in overtime on Tuesday.

UNT (3-3) slowly built a double-digit lead in the second half that topped out at 57-40 with 7:11 left in the second half. From there, head coach Mike Petersen said the offense was derailed by five turnovers down the stretch.

“You can’t go seven minutes and score four points and expect to win,” he said. “You can’t average almost a turnover a minute against a good team.”

The Mean Green offense started the game red-hot, making 13 of its 25 shots in the first half at a 52% clip. But the team struggled down the stretch and made just two of its eight shots in the overtime period, which was not enough to overcome a resilient Grand Canyon team (5-0).

Grand Canyon junior guard Kaitlyn Petersen led the comeback, scoring a game-high 23 points and hitting six of her 10 three-pointers – including three straight in the final minutes.

“We need to learn to finish at the end, take care of the ball and defend,” senior guard Desiree Nelson said.

With 14 seconds remaining in a tie game, junior guard BreAnna Dawkins had a chance to win the game for the Mean Green in regulation. Driving into the lane, she found junior forward Breisha Wynn open on the baseline for a jump shot that went in. But the momentum carried her into a Grand Canyon defender and the referees called a charging foul to wave off the shot and send the game into overtime.

“We wanted to get the last shot, we wanted to get a decent look, and the ball went in,” Petersen said. “She just needed to stop instead of continuing forward.”

Prior to overtime, the only lead Grand Canyon had was in the first minute of the first half.

“We got a lot of good looks,” sophomore forward Acheil Tac said. “We just have to finish down the stretch.”
