After reaching a season low 2-10 record after losing four straight games to start the winter break, the Mean Green gained momentum and won the next four games, all against conference opponents.

A 4-4 record might sound ordinary to some, but considering the circumstances, it’s much more impressive.

The Mean Green dropped two straight games before getting some time off for Christmas and things only got worse coming back from the holidays. UNT lost consecutive conference matches against Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky. At this point, the team had won just two of its 12 games on the season, and head coach Mike Petersen did all he could to keep his team confident and optimistic.

“It’s hard, I’m not going to lie to you,” Petersen said. “I give our players a lot of credit. I don’t know if I’ve been around a team that has dealt with disappointment as well as they have.”

Returning home seemed to be the trick because the Mean Green took care of business at the Super Pit, securing victories over Troy and the University of Louisiana-Monroe.

The University of Arkansas-Little Rock game had extra significance, as the winner would take the lead in the west division of the Sun Belt. UNT dominated the game early, leading 14 points at halftime, only to see UALR come back and take a five point lead with five minutes to play.

The team never gave up, and huge three pointers from freshman guard Loryn Goodwin and junior guard Desiree Nelson helped spur the team to a 68-65 victory.
“I still can’t tell you how we won at Little Rock,” Petersen said. “I have no idea how we won that game other than we made some big shots and kept playing hard.”

The team closed out the break on Saturday with a 67-47 blowout victory over South Alabama (10-7).

From the very start of its game with South Alabama, the Mean Green took total control thanks to hot shooting, unrelenting defense and constant energy.

“It’s all about sharing the ball and finding the open man,” sophomore guard BreAnna Dawkins said.

The game was a representation of what the Mean Green has been doing during the win streak that has the team headed in the right direction.

“I think we’re really playing together and doing a much better job of executing,” junior guard Laura McCoy said. “It’s working for us.”
