The Mean Green women’s basketball dropped to 0-5 on the season Wednesday night after a 62-55 loss on the road to Southern Methodist University.

North Texas was looking to defeat SMU on the road for the first time since 1989 and had a legitimate chance after trailing by just one point, 30-29, at halftime. The team was able to keep the Mustang lead within seven points the entire second half and even tied the game at 57-57 with 5:57 remaining.

However, poor free throw shooting again haunted the Mean Green as it shot 46.7 percent from the line for the game and missed its final four free throws to help give SMU the edge.

“Every game means a lot to us,” junior forward Acheil Tac said. “We really needed this win because it has been tough these past few weeks and we had a plan, just need to learn how to finish late.”

Despite the loss, the Mean Green scored the most points it has in a game this season. Senior forward Briesha Wynn led the way with 17 points and seven rebounds.

“We are in a good place in our season, even though we are 0-5,” Wynn said. “We just haven’t gotten over the hump yet and we may have been worrying too much about what we were doing on offense and defense. It just comes down to becoming mature competitors.”

With this being the fifth straight loss by less than ten points, head coach Mike Petersen said the team needs to learn how to finish close games. In the final three minutes of the game, the Mean Green was held scoreless on offense and throughout the second half there was a total of six missed free throws.

“We are doing a very good job playing hard and sticking to the plan,” Petersen said. “We as a team, and not individuals, just aren’t as competitively mature as we need to be in order to close out close games down the stretch.”

The Mean Green will return home on Sunday to face the University of Oklahoma Sooners and try and earn its first win. Tipoff is set for 11 a.m.
