Anytime Candice Adams sees the opposing team in a 2-3 zone, her eyes immediately light up. That was the case Saturday evening as the senior guard knocked down a career-high six 3-pointers on 13 attempts.

Adams was one of three players on the Mean Green to score in double-digits, but the trio of sophomore guard Terriell Bradley (19 points), senior forward Terra Ellison (19), and Adams (18) was not enough. North Texas (6-12, 3-4) fell to Louisiana Tech University 72-65 at the Super Pit.

Adams kept the Mean Green in the game throughout, as her 3-point shot often swung the momentum throughout the game.

“I was very open [today],” Adams said. “They weren’t guarding the corners that well and my teammates moved the ball well to find me.”

The Mean Green bench was outscored 28 to four, which is indicative of how much others struggled to score for North Texas. Ellison, Bradley and Adams combined to score 86 percent of the team’s points, but that distribution was not aberrant to head coach Jalie Mitchell.

“I think that’s typical of us, as you see Kelsey [Criner’s] percentage wasn’t great and Ty [Warren] didn’t hit hers tonight,” Mitchell said. “I think it’s pretty normal as far as the people who got the shots, [those three] just made more than the other ones.”

The game was closely called by the officials as the teams combined to shoot 46 free throws, including 34 in the second half. LA Tech (9-9, 4-3) had an upper hand at the free-throw line as they were more aggressive driving to the rim and posting up in the paint.

“It was no different, we just had to buckle down and get stops,” Ellison said. “We caused a lot of turnovers and fouls, so the fouling, getting them to the line, is where we lost it.”

Six players had three or more fouls for the Mean Green and Bradley fouled out with less than four minutes left in the game.

As a result, senior guard Kelsey Criner was thrown into the game and committed three costly turnovers over the final three minutes. The turnovers sealed the win for the Lady Techsters and the timeliness killed all momentum.

“I thought down the stretch, they finished it better than we did,” Mitchell said. “From taking care of the ball to us fouling, I thought those were two big reasons why they got it done and we did not. [We] have to take care of the ball.”

The Mean Green allowed 31 points off turnovers and 12 fast-break points. Those numbers, along with Louisiana Tech’s free throw tally, show that North Texas gave away too many easy points to the Lady Techsters.

In a very back and forth game, North Texas fell short despite one of its the best shooting performances of the season.

“40 minutes – [we] need to put 40 great minutes together and I think we’ll be fine,” Mitchell said.

Next up: North Texas faces the University of North Carolina at Charlotte on the road Thursday at 6 p.m.
