The Mean Green women’s basketball team won a 75-74 overtime thriller against the Division II Southern Arkansas University in its lone exhibition game of the season Thursday night at the Super Pit.

“What you want out of these games is information,” head coach Mike Petersen said. “Exhibition games are just that, they’re exhibitions. We won tonight, that’s fine. If we lost we would’ve been the same 0-0 that we are right now.”

The Mean Green built up a 22-12 lead over Southern Arkansas with about 10 minutes left to play in the first half. The team withstood a 16-2 Southern Arkansas run to take a 33-30 lead into halftime, but shot 36.1 percent from the field in the first half and had 16 turnovers.

“Part of our problem was we had too many post turnovers,” Petersen said. “We had some travels, mostly travels frankly, in the post. And we just need to slow down in there and finish strong is all.”

The Mean Green maintained a lead for the first part of the second half, but Southern Arkansas wouldn’t let the Mean Green go up by more than seven points.

With the game tied at 63-63 with 2:00 left to play, sophomore forward Eboniey Jeter hit a lay up to put North Texas up 65-63. Southern Arkansas hit a three with 57 seconds left to take a 67-66 lead, but North Texas answered back with a layup by sophomore guard Candice Adams with 42 seconds left. Southern Arkansas quickly ran down the court to put in another lay up for a 68-67 lead.

With 6.8 seconds left, senior guard Joh’Vonna Darrington was fouled and hit one-of-two free throws to tie the game at 68-68 to force overtime.

In overtime, both teams went back and forth, but North Texas held a 75-74 advantage with 16.4 seconds left to play after senior forward Briesha Wynn’s two missed free throws. Southern Arkansas had the ball with 4.3 seconds left, but was unable to score, giving the Mean Green a hard fought victory.

“As the game went on we started to mesh a little bit more,” Jeter said. “We practice together and we feel each other in practice, but I feel like we don’t really get like the game situation. So this was the perfect time to expose what we need to work on.”

The Mean Green shot 33.3 percent from the field for the game, and also had 23 total turnovers. However, Jeter shined with 26 point, 12 rebounds and two blocks.

“Aggressive is the second name for me,” Jeter said. “I can’t play and not be physical. Our jump shots aren’t falling, the guards realize it. Put the ball inside and try to get rebounds and put backs.”

Next up, the team will play its first regular season game against the University of Houston on Nov. 14. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Super Pit.
