The Mean Green women’s golf team finished a disappointing eighth out of 11 teams at the Sun Belt Conference Tournament this week, ending a frustrating season filled with difficulties, head coach Jeff Mitchell said.

Despite shooting its best round on Wednesday, the Mean Green was unable to climb out of the No. 8 spot. The team finished with a score of 306 in the final round, but still ended the tournament 12 strokes behind No. 7 Georgia State University.

“I really felt like we had an opportunity to have a really good tournament, and we just didn’t,” Mitchell said. “Nobody played that well in the tournament, and it was really a continuation of what we’ve been doing all year long.”

Mitchell said to be competitive, four or five golfers need to be playing well every round and that did not happen.

“It’s been a weird year, we didn’t play well [in the fall] and that seems to have just plagued us the whole year,” Mitchell said. “The whole year was pretty frustrating.”

Sophomore McKenzie Ralston shot a 230 for the tournament and finished 14 over par, which tied her for No. 23. Junior Chaslyn Chrismer shot 15 over par for the tournament, finishing at 231, tying her for No. 25.

Chrismer said that the team struggled despite giving its best effort at the tournament.

“We could have done better, but we just didn’t get the results that we wanted,” Chrismer said. “We focused at practice. We did what we were supposed to do. But when it came to crunch time, we fell back.

The team fought hard, but it failed to birdie as many times as it should have, Ralston said.

“It was disappointing,” Ralston said. “But I think it will be a good basis to build off for next year.”
