Women’s golf struggles in season opening tournament

The North Texas women’s golf team kicked off the 2015 season in Memphis on Sept. 14-15, finishing in 14th place in the Fed-Ex Memphis Intercollegiate Tournament with an overall team score of 951.
The host Memphis Tigers finished well above the rest of the pack in first place, as senior Ashleigh Whisenant and freshman Madison Thomas tied atop the leaderboard with a 4-over par 217.
Although the Mean Green had a disappointing overall performance, interim head coach Berry Niemann was impressed by the play of freshman Kalli Jennings.
“I was pleased with Kalli’s performance,” Niemann said. “It was her first college tournament, and she handled it really well.”
Jennings, who joins the Mean Green this season after leading Andrews High School to a fourth consecutive state title last year, finished 54th in the tournament. Jennings shot a 76, 84, and 77 to finish 24-over par in the three-round tournament.
“I was nice and calm, and I felt well prepared for the tournament,” Jennings said. “I was fairly satisfied with the first and third-round, but that middle round was pretty disappointing.”
As a team, the Mean Green steadily improved from round to round, moving from a 38-over par team score in the first round to a 24-over score in the third-round.
Redshirt sophomore Abbi Shaddix and sophomore Nyca Khaw each finished with a 23-over par 236 to lead the Mean Green. Khaw had the best individual round for the Mean Green in Memphis, finishing 4-over par with a 75 in the third round.
“I hit my driver and hit more fairways on the second day of the tournament,” Shaddix. “The first two rounds were pretty rough, but it was a tough course. It was a learning experience for the rest of the year, and let me know what I need to improve on.”
The Mean Green will next compete in the Bob Hurley ORU Invitational Sept. 28-29 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
