The Mean Green women’s golf team finished in 11th place in the Price’s Give Em Five intercollegiate in a two-day tournament in Las Cruces, New Mexico Wednesday afternoon. North Texas as a team posted a 33-over par with a total score of 897.

“I think we had a very positive outcome,” head coach Jeff Mitchell said. “Freshman Nyca Khaw had a good top team finish. This tournament was a very big improvement from our past one but I was a bit disappointed in the rest of the play. This tournament exposed some of our strengths and weaknesses but we did manage a good attitude and make good birdies and bogies overall.”

Khaw tied for 34thplace with an 8-over par and a total score of 224. In the first round Khaw shot a 1-over par 73, 4-over par 76 in the second and a 3-over par 75 in the third. She also finished the third round with three birdies.

“It went great for me,” Khaw said. “The last tournament wasn’t so good, I didn’t perform as well as I wanted to so I’m happy with my performance. It was my first time on this course and it was really nice to me to play on.”

Mean Green senior Maraea Durie finished the tournament with a top-25 finish and led the team throughout the contest. She ended up in a three-way tie for 15th place.. Starting the second day at the eighth hole, Durie was even to par and ended round one 1-over par 73. In the round two Durie had better success, shooting 1-under par and breaking even for most of the round but ultimately ended the round 1-under par 71. During the final round she shot a 2-over par 74 with three birdies in a row.

“I played pretty well,” Durie said. “I was pretty consistent but there are things I need to work on. During the first day I was a little nervous but once I got comfortable I did pretty well.”

The team will take the course again during Oct. 26-28 when they take part in the Las Vegas Collegiate
