Spring break is a time when college students are done with midterms and ready to have fun. UNT’s Student Money Management Center is providing a free workshop concentrated on managing and budgeting student’s finances for the break in March.
For the third spring semester in a row, the center is helping students budget their break by finding good flight deals, ways to save on gas, taxi service for the areas they plan on vacationing and fun spots in the local areas for those who plan on staying nearby. The workshop is from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. today in the Business Leadership Building, room 035.
Money management mentor and organizational behavior senior Paul Love will guide students through power points, evaluations, a Q&A session and discussion about the information provided. Love has worked with the center for two years..
“If you’re just now getting things together, like buying plane tickets and making reservations, be prepared to run into price gouging,” Love said.
Smaller turnouts with 15-20 people allow the mentors to provide more information that is selective to the students in attendance.
“We kind of gear the presentation to the crowd we get,” mentor and accounting senior Stephen Trevino said. “If they want more information on one topic in particular then we’ll go more in-depth on that.”
Trevino came up with the idea to host budgeting workshops.
Over the semesters, UNT organizations have covered workshops about spring break, focusing on the dangers of drinking and safety while traveling. While working with the Wellness Center a few semesters ago, the center was able to cover the dangers of over-indulging drinkers as well as financing topics for past students.
“I think it’s pretty awesome that the school has different events to help and teach you how to manage your money on a college budget,” business freshman Chinonso Osuji said. “Managing money and time is something that I personally struggle with.”
